User Group Roundup: Connecting the IBM i Community

Power Systems user groups provide valuable opportunities for education, networking and connection

“One thing constant about IT is change—along with the need to constantly learn and grow with technology changes. But something that has not changed over the years is that organizations need to understand the offerings available to them and also be sold on the value of education. Local user groups have impacted and addressed that need,”
says Laura Ubelhor, owner of Consultech Services, Inc. and secretary of COMMON Education Foundation.

Education is part of what makes user groups so valuable, according to Ubelhor. She says user groups are “very affordable, providing an option for those with a big or little budget for education.”

Over the years, local user groups have evolved to include new generations of IBM i resources as well as younger generations of IBM i community members. Ubelhor mentions, “Groups have expanded their offerings to include local conference events, student activities, hands-on activities, virtual meetings, stronger ties to local colleges, competitions and other creative offerings.”

While user groups are constantly evolving to meet the changing needs of the IBM i community, one thing has remained consistent for the past 35 years:  “All user groups have community connection and education as a mission and goal,” says Ubelhor.
