In a TechTalk podcast exploring technologies shaping the future, Alex Roytman, CEO of Profound Logic, urges listeners to embrace the potential artificial intelligence (AI) offers to IBM i users.
While many business partners talk about modernization, Roytman prefers to talk about futurization. “We like to use the term ‘futurize,’” Roytman says. “It's a way of encapsulating our active ideation around future technologies and how we can make them accessible and beneficial to our customers.”
Modernization refers to updating existing systems with new technology. However, futurizing takes it a step further, Roytman told podcast host Charles Guarino. This concept is about embracing and implementing advanced technologies such as AI not just to upgrade, but to revolutionize how things are done.

More specifically, tools like GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT are disrupting workflows in the tech sphere. These AI technologies don't simply upgrade, they completely rewrite the game, according to Roytman.
Of course, with great power, come substantial challenges. There are concerns around hype, biases and potential misuse of AI. These limitations shouldn't be ignored but rather understood and addressed concurrently with AI adoption.
Roytman stresses, “It's crucial to understand the limitations of AI. It’s easy to get caught up in the hype, but it's equally important to focus on practical applications and potential impacts of AI.”
Large language models, APIs and understanding context are crucial aspects of AI applications. They are used in business intelligence and data integration, enhancing efficiency and accuracy. AI models require rigorous training and fine-tuning, with automated testing being crucial in validating AI-generated code.
The payoff? A competitive advantage for businesses that embrace AI. Getting started with AI may be simpler than you think—just start using AI tools in your day-to-day work and explore the potential, for instance through the ChatGPT API.
“Your competitors are probably exploring AI’s potential benefits," he tells Guarino. “So it’s essential to stay ahead of the curve.”
Prompt engineering is another important aspect of AI. Tweaking prompts can yield different responses from AI models, enabling flexibility and customization.

AI is anticipated to continue impacting diverse industries and job roles, although its exact future remains unpredictable.
When asked about the future impact of AI, Roytman admitted it’s difficult to predict the exact impact. “However," he says, “it’s safe to say that AI will significantly influence various aspects of our lives, and staying abreast of these changes is key to navigating the future successfully.”
So, Roytman advises IT professionals to step into the future and “futurize,” because modernizing is no longer enough.
